You land after a week of shooting. In your bag: two portable SSDs, an iPad, and a few thousand RAW frames you have not looked at since pressing the shutter. The desk and the laptop are hours away. But the cull does not have to wait.
An external SSD plugged into an iPad is the fastest, simplest culling setup a photographer can carry. No network. No NAS credentials. No Lightroom import dialogue. You plug the drive into the USB-C port, open the folder, and go. Every rating you make lands in an XMP sidecar on the drive itself, where your desktop editor finds it later.

Why would you cull from an external SSD on an iPad?
Three reasons, and they compound.
First, speed. A directly attached SSD reads faster than any network share. A Samsung T7 over USB-C delivers roughly 1,000 MB/s - ten times what a typical gigabit NAS link provides. Full-resolution RAW previews appear instantly, even on 45MP or 60MP files. There is no buffering and no lag between swipes. The culling interface stays fluid regardless of file size.
Second, portability without compromise. A portable SSD weighs less than 100 grams and fits in a pocket. Plug it into your iPad on a train, in a cafe, on a flight, or in a hotel room with unreliable Wi-Fi. No internet connection is needed. No NAS needs to be reachable. The entire culling station is two objects you already carry: the iPad and the drive.
Third, zero import tax. When you cull in Lightroom, you import everything before you can make a single decision. A 1,200-frame folder of 45MP RAW files takes 10 to 15 minutes just for import and preview generation, and you are generating previews for frames you plan to reject. Culling from the SSD on an iPad skips that step entirely. You rate on the drive, then import only the keepers into your editor. On a folder where 85 per cent of frames are destined for the reject pile, you save building previews for roughly 1,000 images.

What do you need to cull from an external SSD on an iPad?
The hardware list is short, but two details trip people up: power and formatting.
An iPad with USB-C. Any recent iPad works: iPad Pro (2018 or later), iPad Air (4th gen or later), iPad mini (6th gen), or the base iPad (10th gen onwards). The USB-C port provides both data and power, which matters if your SSD draws bus power. Lightning iPads from earlier generations are not suitable for direct SSD culling; they do not supply enough power to most portable SSDs.
A USB-C SSD. Almost any modern portable SSD works. Common choices: Samsung T7 or T9, SanDisk Extreme or Extreme Pro, Crucial X9 or X10, WD My Passport SSD. Drives formatted as exFAT or APFS mount on iPadOS without additional software. Drives formatted as NTFS (common on Windows-origin drives) are read-only on iPadOS; reformat to exFAT if you need write access for the XMP sidecars.
A card reader (optional, for the initial copy). If your camera captures to SD or CFexpress cards, you need a card reader to copy the shoot to the SSD before culling. A USB-C reader that handles both card formats covers every common camera system. Copy the shoot folder to the SSD, then cull from the SSD. The copy step takes minutes. The cull takes under an hour. You have clean, rated files on a drive you can hand off or archive.
Step by step: culling from an external SSD on your iPad
1. Copy your shoot to the SSD (if it is not already there)
If you shot to SD or CFexpress cards, copy the entire folder structure to the SSD first. Plug the card reader and the SSD into your iPad. Open the Files app. Navigate to the card (listed under Locations), drill into the DCIM folder, and copy the shoot folder - for example 100CANON - to your SSD. A typical folder path on the SSD might be /Samsung T7/Shoots/2026-07-26-Wedding/DCIM/100CANON/.
If you shot tethered directly to the SSD, your files are already there. Skip to step 2.
2. Open CullKit and select Local Folder
CullKit presents a file browser when you choose Local Folder. Navigate to your SSD in the list (it appears by drive name: Samsung T7, SanDisk Extreme, and so on). Drill into your shoot directory. CullKit reads the folder in place. Nothing is copied to the iPad’s internal storage.
3. Browse the grid before starting a culling session
The photo grid shows every frame in the folder. Pinch to zoom the grid density: zoom out for an overview of the full shoot, zoom in to inspect individual frames. Thumbnails load progressively. This is where you spot whole sequences - the burst run you will keep, the test-frame batch you will reject - before committing to the full-screen review.
4. Start the culling session
Choose your start mode: all frames, unrated only (for a fresh folder), or filtered (if you have already rated some and want to continue). The session opens full-screen with the first frame, edge to edge.
5. Rate with swipe gestures
The culling interface is touch-driven. Swipe right to keep a frame. Swipe left to reject it. A quick-access bar at the bottom gives you star ratings (1 to 5) and colour labels (the Lightroom palette: red, yellow, green, blue, purple). You can configure what each swipe direction does: one direction for a 5-star rating, another for a reject flag. Auto-advance moves you to the next frame after each action, so your thumb settles into a rhythm and the decisions flow at 2 to 3 seconds per frame.
On a 1,000-frame folder, a first-pass keep-or-reject sweep takes roughly 30 to 40 minutes. A second pass to star-rate the survivors (the 150 to 200 frames that survived rejection) adds another 10 to 15 minutes.
6. Complete the session
When you finish the last frame, CullKit presents the batch-review summary. Confirm your selects. The app writes XMP sidecar files - one per RAW image, a few kilobytes each - directly onto the SSD, in the same folder as the originals. RAW and JPEG pairs share a single sidecar, following the Lightroom convention. The sidecars are plain XML text files: if your RAW is IMG_4723.CR3, the sidecar is IMG_4723.CR3.xmp.
7. Eject the SSD safely
Eject the drive from the Files app before unplugging it: tap the eject icon next to the drive name under Locations. The drive is now ready to connect to your Mac, with every rating already written.
How do my ratings get into Lightroom from an iPad SSD cull?
This is the handoff that makes the whole workflow work. Every star rating, reject flag, colour label, and tag you assigned on the iPad is stored in an XMP sidecar file on the SSD. The sidecar lives in the same folder as the RAW. It is a file, not a database entry.
When you plug the SSD into your Mac and open Lightroom, point the Import dialog at the shoot folder. Lightroom reads XMP sidecars during import. The star ratings appear on the thumbnails before you click Import. Filter the grid to show only your keepers (3 stars and above, or flagged picks), uncheck everything below your threshold, and import only what you intend to edit. The rejected frames stay on the drive, untouched.
If the folder is already in your Lightroom catalogue (for example, if you started importing before you finished the culling pass), select the folder in the Library module and run Metadata > Read Metadata from Files. Lightroom reloads the sidecars and updates the catalogue entries.
The XMP path is the transport. The file system is the sync service. No cloud. No export step. No manual metadata merge. You rated on the iPad. Lightroom reads on the Mac. One step.
Does the XMP workflow also work with Capture One?
Yes. Capture One reads XMP sidecars on import into a session or catalogue exactly as Lightroom does. The star ratings, colour labels, and flags you set on the iPad appear in Capture One’s browser automatically when you import the folder.
There is one difference worth noting. Lightroom re-reads sidecar changes automatically when you synchronise a folder; Capture One does not. If you add new ratings on the iPad after importing the folder into a Capture One session, use Metadata > Load Metadata (or right-click the folder and select Reload Metadata) to pull the changes back in. Import once, cull on the iPad, reload if needed. The XMP file on the SSD is the single source of truth for every tool that reads it.
External SSD vs memory card: which should you cull from?
Both paths end the same way: a folder of rated RAWs with XMP sidecars, ready for your editor. The decision comes down to whether you want the ratings written onto the memory card itself or onto a separate drive.
Culling from the memory card (covered in our memory card culling guide) writes XMP sidecars directly onto the card. This is the fastest possible start: you plug the card in and go, no copy step at all. The risk is that sidecars on the card are lost if you format the card in-camera before copying the folder. Always copy the card before formatting.
Culling from an external SSD requires one extra step: copying the card to the SSD first. But the SSD gives you higher read speeds, more storage headroom for sidecar writes, and no risk of an in-camera format wiping your ratings. The SSD is also the destination drive you will plug into your Mac for editing, so the sidecars are on the drive you edit from, with no second copy step.
A practical hybrid: copy your memory cards to the SSD as soon as you get back from a shoot. Do the cull on the iPad from the SSD the same evening. The SSD becomes both your culling drive and your editing drive. You handle the files exactly once.
What about power? Will culling drain my iPad or the SSD?
Bus-powered SSDs draw power from the iPad’s USB-C port. A Samsung T7 draws roughly 2.5 watts during sustained reads. An iPad Pro running a culling session at full-screen brightness draws around 5 to 7 watts, including the SSD power. Total load: 7 to 10 watts.
A fully charged iPad Pro (11-inch) has a roughly 29-watt-hour battery. That gives you roughly 3 to 4 hours of continuous culling before the battery runs low. In practice, a culling session on a 1,200-frame folder takes under an hour, so battery is rarely the limiting factor.
If you are spending a full day culling multiple shoots, carry a USB-C power bank or plug the iPad into a charger. The iPad can charge while powering an SSD over the same port if you use a hub or a pass-through adapter, though some hubs introduce enough power negotiation overhead that the SSD disconnects intermittently. Test your hub-and-drive combination at home before relying on it on the road.
A powered USB-C hub (one with its own power supply and dedicated data ports) eliminates the power question entirely. The hub powers the SSD from the mains, and the iPad connects to the hub for data only, charging from its own port or from the hub’s pass-through. This is the most reliable setup for long sessions.
Can I cull video files from the SSD too?
Yes. CullKit handles video files (.mp4, .mov) and Apple Live Photos alongside still images in the same culling session. The video preview plays inline in the grid and the full-screen viewer. You rate and reject video frames the same way you rate stills. Those ratings are written to XMP sidecars on the SSD, just as they are for RAW files.
For wedding and event photographers who capture video segments alongside stills, the single-session approach keeps everything together. You are not switching between one app for stills and another for video. One culling pass covers the full folder.
Troubleshooting: external SSD culling on iPad
- The drive does not appear in the Files app or CullKit. Confirm the SSD is formatted as exFAT or APFS. NTFS drives are read-only on iPadOS; CullKit can read from them but cannot write XMP sidecars. Reformat the drive to exFAT on a Mac or Windows machine (back up your data first).
- The drive keeps disconnecting mid-session. Some bus-powered SSDs draw more current than the iPad’s USB-C port can sustain during peak read bursts. Try a shorter USB-C cable (under 0.5 metres), a different cable known to support USB 3.2 data rates, or a powered USB-C hub. Poorly shielded cables are the most common cause of intermittent disconnects.
- Sidecars are not written to the SSD. Check that the drive is not read-only (NTFS format) and that it has enough free space. XMP sidecar files are tiny - a few kilobytes each - so a full SSD is unlikely to be the cause. More commonly, the session was interrupted before completion. Return to the session and finish it. Sidecars are written at session completion, not incrementally.
- RAW previews do not render. CullKit uses the operating system’s RAW decoder plus its own fallback renderer. A camera body released after the latest iPadOS update may lack OS-level RAW support. JPEG and HEIC files always render. If your camera is brand new, check for iPadOS and CullKit updates.
- Ratings do not appear in Lightroom after importing. Confirm the XMP sidecar files are present in the same folder as the RAWs on the SSD. Then run Metadata > Read Metadata from Files on the folder in Lightroom. For Capture One, use Metadata > Load Metadata.
Tips for a faster iPad SSD cull
A few habits make the workflow noticeably quicker:
- Cull in two passes. A fast first pass rejects the obvious discards (blinks, misfires, near-duplicate burst frames). A second pass - switch the session to unrated only - adds star ratings to the survivors. Separating “is this usable?” from “how good is it?” stops you agonising over ratings on frames you were always going to drop.
- Use a stand or folio case. Propping the iPad frees your swiping hand and reduces fatigue. The device becomes a dedicated culling screen, not something you hold.
- Go full brightness. For judging exposure and sharpness, run the display at full brightness in a dim environment. The iPad display is well calibrated for colour.
- Configure your swipes once. Map swipe directions to the actions you use most (keep, reject, 5-star) so your thumb settles into a rhythm.
- Copy the card while you cull. If you have multiple cards, copy the second card to the SSD while culling the first. By the time you finish the first cull, the second card is ready.
- Cull the evening of the shoot. The SSD is the lowest-friction setup there is. Do the first pass the same day while the shoot is fresh. The editing desk can wait.
