An event photographer shoots differently from a wedding photographer. A wedding has a ceremony, a reception, a first dance. An event — a conference, a gala dinner, an awards night, a corporate launch — has a speaker at a lectern, delegates networking, an empty room before the doors open, a dance floor after midnight, and a hundred handshakes in between. The shooting is continuous, the volume is high, and the client wants the gallery before breakfast the next morning.

Why do event photographers need a different culling workflow?
Event photography is structurally different from wedding photography, and the culling bottleneck reflects that.
First, the volume is higher. A full-day conference with breakout sessions, an exhibition floor, and an evening gala produces 2,000 to 3,000 frames. You are shooting continuously from arrival shots at 08:00 through to the last dance at midnight. A wedding may peak at 2,000 frames over 10 hours; a corporate event can hit 3,500 across 16 hours of programming. More frames means a longer cull, and the post-event window is shorter because corporate clients expect delivery faster than wedding clients do.
Second, the turnaround is tighter. Wedding clients typically expect a gallery within a week. Event and corporate clients often want selects the same night or the following morning — for social media, for press, for the morning debrief. A cull that takes three hours at your desk after you get home means the client waits an extra half-day. A cull that happens on-site, during the dinner break or in the taxi to the hotel, cuts that half-day from the delivery timeline entirely.
Third, the venue is different. A wedding venue is chosen for its beauty; an event venue is chosen for its logistics. You are more likely to have access to a stable network, a quiet corner with a power socket, and a desk or countertop at a conference centre than at a country house wedding. These practical factors make on-site culling more viable for event work.

How to set up for on-site culling at an event
The setup depends on where your photos live during the event. Event photographers typically use one of three configurations, and the best one depends on the venue and your equipment.
Option 1: Memory card direct to iPad. This is the simplest setup and the one to use if you shoot to a single card and have card changes during the event. During a break — the lunch hour, the gap between afternoon sessions and the gala — plug your latest card into the iPad via a card reader. Cull the frames you have shot so far. When the card is full or the session is done, copy the card to your Mac or NAS and move to the next card. This incremental approach means you never face 3,000 unrated frames at the end of the night. Each cull pass handles 400 to 600 frames at a time, which takes around 12 to 15 minutes per pass.
Option 2: Copy to an external SSD during the event. If you have a laptop at the venue running tethered capture or a card-dumping station, copy each card to a portable SSD as you go. The SSD becomes your working drive. When you have a gap in the programme, plug the SSD into your iPad and cull. The direct USB-C connection gives you the fastest preview loading times, and the SSD holds everything in one place. At the end of the event, plug the SSD into your Mac and import only the rated frames into Lightroom.
Option 3: Event NAS over SMB. Some event photographers travel with a portable NAS — a small Synology or QNAP device in the camera bag, connected to the venue’s network or running its own Wi-Fi hotspot. Copy cards to the NAS as you shoot, and cull from the iPad over the local network during breaks. This setup keeps the library centralised and lets a second shooter or assistant review frames on their own device simultaneously. The SMB connection path is smb://<NAS-IP>/event-shoot; CullKit connects through Bonjour auto-discovery if the NAS advertises itself on the network, or through a manual IP address entry.
For all three setups, the CullKit connection takes under a minute. The app remembers your recent folders and NAS addresses. On subsequent breaks, connecting is a single tap.
How does the on-site culling session work?
The session flow is the same as any CullKit cull, but the on-site context changes the rhythm. Here is how an event photographer works through a 2,000-frame shoot over the course of an event day.
First pass: between sessions (10 to 15 minutes). You have just finished the morning keynotes and panel discussions. You shot 600 frames. During the coffee break, you plug your card or SSD into the iPad and swipe through the lot. You reject the frames where the speaker’s eyes are closed, the podium blocks their face, or the shot is a duplicate of the one you took a second before. The keepers — the wide shot of the packed room, the tight portrait of the CEO at the lectern, the reaction shot of the audience laughing — get a star. This pass takes roughly 15 minutes on 600 frames and leaves you with about 180 rated survivors.
Second pass: during lunch (15 to 20 minutes). You have another 500 frames from the breakout sessions. You cull these the same way, or you add them to the existing session in unrated-only mode. By now the afternoon programme is about to start and you have roughly 700 frames culled down to 200 rated keepers.
Third pass: after the gala (30 to 40 minutes). The awards have been handed out. The dance floor is winding down. You have 900 more frames from the evening. You sit at a table in the corner with your iPad and finish the cull. The total for the day: 2,000 frames shot, 600 keepers rated, all with XMP sidecars written to your drive. You pack up, go to your hotel, and sleep. In the morning, you plug the drive into your Mac and the rated selects are waiting in Lightroom.
The total culling time across the day: roughly 60 to 75 minutes, spread across breaks you were already taking anyway. The alternative — waiting until you got home the next afternoon and culling for three hours at your desk — adds half a day to the delivery timeline.
How fast can you realistically cull event photos?
Speed depends on how decisive you are, not on the tool. But the tool should never be the bottleneck.
On an iPad, the swipe-left-to-reject, swipe-right-to-keep interface moves at roughly two seconds per frame for a first pass that only separates usable from unusable. A 600-frame card takes about 20 minutes. A second pass that assigns star ratings to the survivors moves slightly faster because there are fewer frames and you are comparing them against each other: another 10 to 12 minutes for the 180 survivors.
On Mac, keyboard culling is faster for experienced users. The number keys map to star ratings (1 to 5), P marks a pick, X marks a reject, and the arrow keys move through the sequence. With auto-advance, each decision and the transition to the next frame takes about a second and a half. A keyboard cull on 2,000 frames takes roughly 50 minutes in one sitting, though most event photographers prefer to work in passes as described above rather than in a single marathon session.
The bottleneck is never the preview loading time when you are working from a directly attached SSD. A Samsung T7 over USB-C delivers full-resolution RAW previews in under half a second, even for 45-megapixel files. Over a NAS on a good 5 GHz Wi-Fi connection, previews take about one to two seconds to load. Neither is slow enough to interrupt the decision rhythm, but an SSD is noticeably snappier when you are culling quickly.
How do my ratings reach Lightroom and Capture One after the event?
The handoff is the part that makes the on-site cull productive. Every star rating, reject flag, and colour label you assign during the event is written to an XMP sidecar file: a small XML file next to your RAW image in the same folder. If your frame is EVT_2841.CR3, the sidecar is EVT_2841.CR3.xmp. Both files live on your drive — the SSD, the NAS, or the memory card you culled from.
When you plug the drive into your Mac at home or in the hotel, the XMP sidecars are already in place. Here is what happens in each editor:
In Lightroom Classic: Open the Import dialog and point it at the event folder. Lightroom reads the sidecars during import and shows every frame with its star rating and colour label already populated. Filter to 3 stars and above, or to flagged picks only, and import just the keepers. The rejected frames stay on the drive but never enter your catalogue. This cuts the Lightroom import from 2,000 frames to 600 keepers, which saves minutes of preview generation and keeps your catalogue lean.
If you had already imported the folder before culling on-site, select it in the Library module and run Metadata > Read Metadata from Files. Lightroom updates the ratings on every frame that has a sidecar.
In Capture One: Import the event folder into a session or catalogue. Capture One reads the XMP sidecars during import and applies the ratings automatically.
In Darktable: Import the folder. Darktable reads XMP sidecars natively and populates the ratings, flags, and colour labels during the folder scan.
The sidecars travel with the folder. If you copy the event folder from the SSD to your NAS for archival, the ratings come with it. If you send the folder to a retoucher, the ratings come with it. The metadata is not tied to CullKit or to the iPad. It is a portable standard that every major desktop editor reads.
What about RAW and JPEG pairs at events?
Many event photographers shoot RAW and JPEG simultaneously: RAW for the edit, JPEG for immediate social media delivery or client previews during the event. CullKit handles these pairs correctly. When you browse a folder that contains both formats for the same shot, CullKit groups them and presents them as a single frame. You see one image per composition, not two. A single XMP sidecar covers both files, following the Lightroom convention.
This matters on site because you cannot afford to double-cull the same composition twice. When you are working through 600 frames in a 15-minute break, seeing the same shot twice would double your effective culling time. RAW+JPEG pairing eliminates that problem.
Can event photographers cull on an iPhone instead of an iPad?
Yes. The iPhone is smaller and more portable, which makes it practical for event photographers who move between rooms and cannot set the iPad down on a table. The culling interface on iPhone is the same swipe-driven design, optimised for one-handed use. The swipe zone covers the centre of the screen, the rating bar sits at the bottom within thumb reach, and auto-advance carries you from frame to frame.
The trade-off is screen size. On an iPad, you can judge sharpness and composition more easily because the display is larger. On an iPhone, you can cull in more places — standing at the back of a keynote hall, in a car between venues, in a queue at the coffee stand. Both devices produce the same XMP sidecar output, so the choice is purely about which form factor suits your event day.
A practical split: use the iPad for the longer culling passes during designated breaks, and use the iPhone for quick, opportunistic passes — the 200 frames from the arrival drinks reception, culled while waiting for the dinner to start.
Troubleshooting on-site culling at events
- The venue Wi-Fi blocks SMB traffic. Conference and hotel networks often isolate client devices from each other, which prevents SMB connections. Bring a portable travel router or use your phone as a hotspot. Connect both the iPad and the NAS to your own network and the SMB connection works. If networking is unreliable, fall back to the SSD setup: copy cards to a portable drive and cull from the drive directly.
- The iPad battery runs low during a long event. A full day of intermittent culling drains roughly 30 to 40 percent of an iPad Pro’s battery. Bring a USB-C power bank that supports Power Delivery. If you are culling from an SSD that draws bus power, use a powered USB-C hub so the drive and the iPad both stay powered.
- Card reader not recognised by the iPad. Confirm you are using a card reader that supports USB-C data transfer, not a charge-only adapter. The card should appear in the Files app on iPadOS before CullKit can see it. If the card is formatted in a camera-specific filesystem that iPadOS cannot read, copy the card to an SSD through a laptop first and cull from the SSD.
- Sidecars not appearing in Lightroom. Confirm the sidecar files (.xmp) exist in the event folder alongside the RAW files. In Lightroom, check Catalog Settings > Metadata and ensure “Automatically write changes into XMP” is enabled. Then run Metadata > Read Metadata from Files on the event folder.
- Session interrupted mid-cull. CullKit’s crash recovery restores your exact position when you return to the app. Whether the iPad went to sleep, the battery died, or you switched apps, your progress is preserved.
A note on what CullKit does not do
