You have finished the cull. Two thousand frames from a wedding, a weekend of travel, or a portrait session are down to a hundred and fifty keepers, each one rated, flagged, and colour-labelled. The hard decisions are behind you. But the folder still looks like a mess: selects mixed with rejects in a flat directory, test shots next to the hero frame, a timeline that makes no sense to anyone who wasn’t there. You could import the whole thing into Lightroom as-is and let your catalogue sort it out. Or you could spend ten minutes organising the folder structure now and save yourself an hour of catalogue wrangling later.
Organising after culling is the step most photographers skip because none of the tools they use were built for it. Lightroom wants you to import first and organise inside the catalogue. Your NAS file browser is slow on a thousand-file folder. The Finder is fine for one-off moves but not for restructuring an entire shoot. CullKit bridges that gap. What does organising after culling actually mean?

The organising step moves those files into destination folders. The goal is to hand your editor a folder structure where the right files are in the right place, with the right ratings, without having to build that structure twice: once on disk and once inside Lightroom. Your catalogue mirrors your filesystem, which means your archive, your backup, and your editor all share the same structure.
Why should you organise your photos before you open Lightroom?
Lightroom is a brilliant editor but a poor file manager. When you import a flat folder of mixed content, Lightroom dutifully catalogues every frame in the order it finds them. If you later want to reorganise, you have two options: reorganise inside Lightroom (by dragging between folders in the Library module, which must be done one folder at a time and only for imported files) or reorganise on disk (which breaks Lightroom’s catalogue links and forces a re-sync). Neither is fast.
Organising before import gives you a single source of truth. Your filesystem is your organisation. Lightroom imports it as-is, and any tool that can read a folder structure (Finder, Windows Explorer, backup software, your second shooter’s machine) sees the same layout. If you archive the shoot to a backup drive two years later, the folder structure still makes sense without needing a Lightroom catalogue to decode it. The file-level organisation outlives any single application.
This is not an argument against Lightroom catalogues. It is an argument for doing the structural work once, at the source, where every tool downstream benefits from it. How do I move my rated photos into the right folders?

What about organising on an iPad or iPhone?
On iPad and iPhone, the organise workflow uses a destination picker rather than drag-and-drop. From the grid view, select your rated frames, tap Move, and browse the folder tree to choose the destination. The picker shows your entire connected library: Synology shares, SMB mounts, local folders, and external drives. Create a new folder from within the picker if the destination doesn’t exist yet. The move runs over your network connection, so a large batch of RAW files may take a minute or two depending on the size of the files and the speed of the link. The iPad workflow is designed for the photographer who culls on the train, on the sofa, or between shoots. How do my organised folders get into Lightroom and Capture One?
The handoff is the simplest step in the entire workflow. You have a folder on your NAS, SSD, or local drive. That folder now contains your selects, sorted into the subfolder structure you created, with XMP sidecars alongside every RAW file. Your star ratings, colour labels, flags, and tags are all inside those sidecars.
Open Lightroom Classic. Choose Import. Point it at the root folder of your organised shoot. Lightroom shows you the entire folder tree with every rating and label already visible in the import grid. Because you already culled and rated, you can uncheck everything below your threshold (say, 3 stars only) and import just the best frames. The catalogue stays lean. The file structure is already correct, so you never need to reorganise inside Lightroom’s Library module.
The same applies to Capture One. Open a session or catalogue, navigate to your organised shoot folder, and import. Ratings and labels appear. The folder structure is preserved as groups in your Capture One library. You start your edit exactly where the cull finished.
If you already imported the shoot into Lightroom before organising, don’t worry. After you restructure the folders in CullKit, go to Lightroom’s Library module, right-click the root folder, and choose Synchronise Folder. Lightroom detects moved files, updated sidecars, and new folders, and updates the catalogue to match. The synchronise step preserves any develop settings you have already applied, so you can reorganise mid-edit without losing work.
Troubleshooting: what if a move doesn’t work?
The move failed with a permissions error. This typically means the destination folder is on a share where your user account has read but not write access. On a Synology NAS, check Shared Folder permissions in DSM Control Panel. On QNAP or TrueNAS, check the SMB share permissions for the user account you connected with. CullKit uses the same credentials you provided when connecting to the share, so if those credentials don’t have write access to the destination, the move will fail. Adjust the permissions on the NAS or choose a destination where the account has full read-write access.
The files moved but the XMP sidecars didn’t follow. CullKit moves sidecars as a unit with their parent files. If sidecars are missing from the destination, check the source folder for orphaned .xmp files. The most common cause is that a sidecar’s base name doesn’t match the RAW file’s base name (for example, DSC_4521.xmp next to DSC_4521 v2.NEF instead of DSC_4521 v2.NEF.xmp). Rename the sidecar to match and CullKit will pick it up on the next session. If sidecars were generated by another tool that uses a different naming convention, standardise to the Lightroom convention (same base name, .xmp extension) before you begin the organise pass.
I moved files into folders but Lightroom shows them as missing. If the folder was already imported into Lightroom before you reorganised it on disk, Lightroom’s catalogue still points to the old file paths. Right-click the root folder in the Library module and choose Synchronise Folder. Lightroom scans the folder, finds the files in their new locations, and updates the catalogue. It preserves all develop settings, collection memberships, and virtual copies. If you get a missing-folder indicator (a question mark on the folder icon), right-click and choose Find Missing Folder, then point it at the new folder location.
The organise-by-date feature put a file in the wrong month. This happens when the EXIF capture date in the file is incorrect. Check the camera’s date and time setting. If the camera clock was off by a month, every frame from that shoot is stamped with the wrong date and sorts into the wrong folder. CullKit reads the EXIF DateTimeOriginal field. If that field is missing or incorrect, the frame is placed in a catch-all folder. To fix the dates, use an EXIF editor to correct the capture dates on the source files, then re-run organise-by-date.
How is this different from organising inside Lightroom or Finder?
Organising inside Lightroom’s Library module works, but it ties your folder structure to your catalogue. If you move files between folders in Lightroom, the move is real: the files change location on disk and the catalogue tracks them. But you can only reorganise files that are already imported. And every time you need to reorganise a large shoot (a hundred frames across ten subfolders), you are navigating Lightroom’s folder panel, which was built for catalogue management, not batch file operations. It works for small adjustments; it is sluggish for restructuring an entire shoot.
Finder, Windows Explorer, and your NAS file browser are faster at bulk moves, but they are metadata-blind. They see files, not ratings. When you move a file with Finder, you cannot filter by star rating. You cannot select “all 4-star and above frames” from a folder of two thousand images unless you have already sorted them visually. Finder also doesn’t care about XMP sidecars: it will happily move the .CR3 without the .CR3.xmp, leaving the sidecar orphaned.

Should I organise into albums, folders, or both?
Folders are the filesystem structure: where the file lives on disk. Albums are virtual groupings: which files belong together, regardless of where they live. Both have a place in a well-organised shoot.
Use folders for the permanent structure. A wedding shoot’s folder tree might look like 2026-07-24-Smith-Wedding/Prep/Ceremony/Reception/Details. That structure is on disk and stays there forever. Every tool sees it. Every backup preserves it. Every archive drive copies it as-is.
Use albums for cross-cutting views. An album called “Bride and Groom Portraits” might pull frames from the Prep folder, the Ceremony folder, and the Reception folder into one flat view. An album called “Client Gallery” might contain every green-labelled frame across the entire shoot, regardless of which subfolder it lives in. Albums are for quick, filtered access during editing and delivery. They don’t change where files live on disk, and they are native to CullKit’s library browser.
You can create both in CullKit. Create folders during the organise pass to build the permanent disk structure. Create albums after the organise pass to group frames for editing or delivery workflows. Both folders and albums are visible in CullKit’s sidebar, and both can be used as the source for a culling session.
